Oleander Hawk Moth Pupae

Oleander Hawk Moth pupae, wriggling left and right.

An Oleander Hawk Moth just emerged.

Actual story: Last year, a few boys found some pupae of the Oleander Hawk Moths and passed them to me. I didn’t know where to keep them, so I placed them in my usual container. I didn’t monitor them for a few days, and the next thing I knew the moths were out. Unfortunately, their wings were brittle and deformed when they emerged. Although handicapped for life, they were big and really beautiful…

Advice to Cyren and his caterpillar: Always keep them in the soil, where its cool and damp!

We have a moth pupae like this that we found buried in the dirt in out garden. We would like to hatch it. How can we keep it to make sure it hatches?

One sure way to let it hatch is to leave it where it is. If you have to take it somewhere, then make sure you get the entire large patch of dirt together with it. But don’t take them out of the dirt…
